FUTURE SERIES I MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT PURCHASE, AND WHY!

Every time I write about orders I put in for series, I get flooded with email suggesting other titles I "might want to consider". It's hard for me to keep track, especially since a lot of those suggestions I've heard before, and in many cases they're titles I've already rejected. So I thought I'd keep a cross-reference here of titles I know about and have already "might wanted to have considered" and whether I actually have any interest in them.

Each title falls into one of four categories:

YES -- means I will probably get it sometime (if it becomes available).
MAYBE -- means I'm currently suspending judgment and waiting for more information. (Sometimes that's because it isn't out yet.
NO -- means it's virtually certain that I'm not interested.
GOT IT -- means I have at least some of the series

Here are some standard reasons why I reject a title:

• Grim and gritty -- Folks, I just don't like that kind of thing. Not interested, not curious. This includes things like Boogiepop Phantom and pretty much anything which involves vampires, as well as a lot of other kinds of shows.
• Like Cowboy Bebop -- which I enjoyed watching right up until I got mugged by the ending, and have never had any urge to watch again. In retrospect, even disregarding the ending, there were a lot of things about that series I didn't like, most notably the fact that every character was warped and disfunctional. The only sympathetic character in the series was the dog. What I actually liked most about the series was the music and the backgrounds, and that's not enough.
• Like Noir -- One of the few series I've given four stars to, and I stand by that. But it was also a continuous downer, and it's another series I have found I have no urge whatever to watch again. I'm glad I watched Noir, and I don't ever want to watch another series like it.
• Gizmo Obsession -- I've now seen at least ten series which featured mechas and I was only really enthusiastic about one of them. Most of them I found to be a complete waste of time; several I didn't even bother to finish watching. The problem is that the writers, and presumably the fans they're writing for, are entranced by the idea of the mechas, and concentrate on the gee-whiz equipment instead of such basics as plot, characterization, and human warmth. That also applies to things like steampunk, or fascination with dirigibles. Generally, when the gizmos are viewed by the writers and artists as particularly nifty, everything else tends to get shortchanged. It's theoretically possible that there could be a good series like this, and in fact I've seen a couple which I liked, but the odds are tremendously against any particular one being any good, and it's a risk I choose not to take, since I do not have infinite time or infinite money.
• Eikenesque -- I like my fan service, yes I do, but there are limits. It's nice to have bouncy girls in a series, but a girl's breasts shouldn't be bigger than her head. The series Eiken is the canonical example of breast-inflation taken to its logical -- and absurd -- limit, and it's just about as bad a series as you'd ever want to avoid, even if you like fan service.
• Braindead -- I like my fan service, yes I do, but there should also be a fascinating story and interesting characters. That's why Ikki Tousen is such a loser, and I don't ever want to watch another series as warped and dreadful.
• Dead girls -- There are better things to do with cute girls than to watch them die horribly. I wish I had known so that I didn't waste my money on Key, the Metal Idol. (Which was also grim and gritty, and like Noir, though nothing like as good.)
• Lolicon -- That's how the Japanese refer to "Lolita Complex", i.e. paedophilia. The buxom 16-year-old is a staple of fan service in anime and and is one thing, but when a series makes "lolis" (girls who haven't gone through puberty yet) into sex objects I get distinctly uncomfortable, and when a paedophile is a significant character in the series I don't tend to find it amusing. That was what turned me off about Azumanga Daioh, for instance.
• Incomplete -- the story doesn't end with the last DVD that's available; major questions remain unanswered and major plot arcs are unresolved. This isn't always a problem for me, but it usually is. There are several series I've bought which frustrated me majorly by not wrapping up their story lines at the end.
• Lousy art -- means I've looked at screen caps and example art and found I was repelled by it. It's my opinion, and even if you loved the art the fact remains I didn't.
• Angst -- Don't get me started. Don't need it, don't want it.
• Gainax crash-and-burn -- Gainax is legendary for its fan service. It's also legendary for substituting train wrecks for the endings of major series. The ending of Mahoromatic made me actively angry. The ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most legendary train wrecks in the entire industry.
• Too derivative -- such as yet another series to try to wring some juice out of the Tenchi Muyo universe (like "Tenchi in Tokyo").
• Blood and gore -- Horror titles just ain't for me
• Annoying characters -- which is one reason why I won't be buying any more of the "Slayers" series
• Pointy chins -- I really hate shoujo romances. Angst moan angst cry moan angst... There's not a 1.0 correlation between pointy chins and shoujo romances, but the correlation is a lot higher than chance would permit
• Slapstick -- especially extremely stylized violence intended to be humor. I prefer my humor to be a bit more clever.
• Hapless hero -- If the protagonist is a loser, I'm unlikely to enjoy the series. That was one of the big reasons Love Hina didn't work for me, though by no means the only one.

Here are some standard reasons why I'm interested in a title:

• Fan of a seiyuu -- I'm curious about the series because a particular voice actor worked on it. This isn't usually enough for me but sometimes it comes up.
• Fan service vehicle -- I really do like my fan service, especially when it's well done, or at least when it isn't totally terrible. Dreadful fan service: Strange Love. Bad fan service: Ikki Tousen. Middling fan service: Plastic Little. Good fan service: Stratos 4. Great fan service: Hand Maid May.
• Kawaii -- I know, I'm a cupcake at heart. I do like some things just because they're cute, e.g. Sugar, a little Snow Fairy. That alone isn't enough, but it's a contributing factor.
• Character driven story -- in the end, it's all about characters, ones I like, ones I like spending time with. (Note that character driven stories can be dreadful, too, if the characters themselves are dreadful.)
• Fan of the character designer -- One of the reasons I liked Stratos 4 was because the character designer also did the character designs for Najica Blitz Tactics. One of the reasons I was interested in G-On Riders was that the same character designer also worked on Hand Maid May.
• Mahou shoujo -- "Magical Girl". Not every mahou shoujo series is good; like any genre it contains stinkers. But I've had good experience with them overall, including some of my favorite series. I use the term rather loosely, by the way; I consider Sugar to be a mahou shoujo series.
• Heartwarming -- depends on how it's handled. Could be a cause of diabetes, but could result in a series I watch again and again. Someday's Dreamers is heartwarming, and is one of my favorites.
• Harem comedy -- It's a genre I've had relatively good luck with. Not every harem comedy is to my taste (I was bored by Love Hina, for instance) but some of my favorite titles are from this genre.
• Joshikousei -- means "high school girls". Not a guarantee of enjoyment, by any means, but generally helps things along a bit.
• Sequel -- a sequel to a series that I really liked. Not all sequels are worthwhile, but I use this tag to mean sequels which I expect will be worthwhile.

Understand that these are mnemonics, not literal descriptions. I don't literally reject a series because of pointy chins; the point is that I don't like shoujo romances. "Grim and gritty" doesn't literally mean that the tone is negative and there's grime all over everything; it instead refers to a general feel that the series conveys.

There are far more titles out there to purchase than I could ever possibly afford, so what I'm really doing when I make purchase decisions is gambling, by betting some of my money on a series in hopes that it will turn out to be good. Therefore I try to maximize my "winnings" by betting on series I think have the greatest chance of pleasing me.

That's why I generally avoid purchasing series which feature mechas. I really loved Sakura Wars and thought Full Metal Panic was pretty good, but almost every other mecha series I've gotten was a complete loser. There might well be another mecha series out there that I would enjoy, but how many more losers would I have to purchase in order to find it? Rather than spend my money on a mecha series with a nominal 10% chance of winning, I'd rather spend it on a mahou shoujo series where the odds of winning are more like 60%.

Also note that these opinions are based on my tastes. They're not universal. The fact that I like something doesn't mean you will -- and the fact that you like something doesn't mean that I will. So writing in to say that Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone Complex "was really fantastic; I really loved it!" isn't too helpful. I'm happy for you. I'm also quite certain I wouldn't like it.

Yamamoto Yohko -- GOT IT -- one of the worst DVDs I've ever bought

You're Under Arrest -- GOT IT -- BORING!

Yumeria -- NO -- lolicon. (There's an excuse in the plot, but I don't care.)

Yume Tsukai -- MAYBE -- Interesting concept, and the art is good. Could be treacly, though.

Zero no Tsukaima -- MAYBE -- A guy becomes a familiar for a tsunderekko witch. (Ubu Roi didn't like it.)
